Understanding skin goals
Specimen · the barrier

What is healthy skin?

Five jobs, labelled
I
Holds water in
Lipids between cells slow evaporation. When they thin out the skin stays dry until those lipids are replaced, which is what a moisturiser is for.
II
Keeps irritants out
An intact surface blocks allergens, pollutants and microbes. A leaky one lets them reach nerve endings, which is what stinging is.
III
Keeps its own acidity
A mildly acidic surface film keeps unwanted microbes in check and enzymes working properly. High-pH soap disrupts it for hours.
IV
Repairs itself
Cells regenerate on a roughly four-week cycle. Interrupt it constantly with acids and scrubs and repair never finishes.
V
Tolerates treatment
A healthy barrier is what lets you use retinoids and acids at all. It is the prerequisite for every other goal.
Supportive, not corrective

What supports the barrier

Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5)
Supports natural repair and reduces water loss. Studied mainly for recovery after procedures like lasers; the evidence for everyday use is thinner than its popularity suggests.
Niacinamide
Strengthens the barrier so it holds moisture and resists irritation, on top of its effects on tone and oil. Very well tolerated, morning or night.
Centella asiatica (cica)
A soothing plant extract that calms sensitive or compromised skin and supports repair. Low irritation risk, once or twice daily.
Ceramides and hyaluronic acid are not listed separately here because a decent moisturiser already carries both. Buying them again as a third serum is paying twice for the same step.
