Medical & Educational Disclaimer

What this site is for, and where its usefulness ends.

SENSIBLE SKIN PTE. LTD. — sensible.com.sg

Read this first

Nothing on this website is medical advice. It is general information about skin and about skincare ingredients. It is not a diagnosis, not a treatment plan, and not a substitute for seeing someone who can examine you.

If you have a symptom that worries you, see a doctor. Do not put it off because of something you read here.

In an emergency in Singapore, call 995.

1. Status of this document

1.1 This Disclaimer forms part of the Terms of Use and is incorporated into them by clause 1.5 of those Terms. Clause 14 of the Terms — our liability — is to be construed with this Disclaimer.

1.2 In this Disclaimer, "Content", "Routine Generator" and "Routine Answers" have the meanings given in clause 2 of the Terms of Use.

2. What the Content is

2.1 The Content is general educational information about skin conditions, skin goals, and the ingredients commonly used to address them.

2.2 It is written for a general reader in Singapore. It describes what is generally known, and, where it is not known, it says so.

2.3 It is directed at no one in particular. It has not been prepared with knowledge of your medical history, your medication, your allergies, your skin, or anything else about you.

3. What the Content is not

3.1 The Content is not medical advice, and must not be relied on as medical advice.

3.2 The Content is not a diagnosis. Reading a description of a condition and recognising yourself in it is not the same as being diagnosed with it. Several skin conditions look alike, some serious conditions look trivial, and the distinction is made by examination, not by reading.

3.3 The Content is not a treatment plan, a prescription, or a recommendation that you use any particular product.

3.4 The Content is not a substitute for consulting a qualified healthcare professional, and it is not an alternative to a face-to-face consultation.

3.5 The Content is not an endorsement of any product, brand, treatment or practitioner, whether named or not.

4. No professional relationship

4.1 Using this website does not create a doctor-patient relationship, or any other professional or clinical relationship, between you and us, or between you and any person associated with us.

4.2 No duty of care in respect of your individual health arises from your reading the Content, from your use of the Routine Generator, or from your purchasing goods through this website.

4.3 Correspondence with us does not create such a relationship either. We cannot and will not give you individual clinical advice by email, however the question is framed. If you write to us with a clinical question, we will tell you to see a doctor, and that will be the whole of our answer.

5. The Routine Generator

5.1 The Routine Generator is an information tool, not a clinical assessment. It applies a fixed set of published rules to the answers you type in.

5.2 It does not examine you. It cannot see your skin. It knows nothing about you that you have not told it, and it cannot tell whether what you told it is right.

5.3 Self-selection is not diagnosis. The tool asks you to identify your own skin type and your own concerns from a set of pictures and labels. If you select "rosacea" and in fact have something else, the tool will produce a routine for rosacea. It has no way of knowing.

5.4 The output is a suggestion for you to consider, and where appropriate to take to a healthcare professional. It is not a prescription and it is not personalised medical advice.

5.5 The suggested routine is generated from the answers stored in your browser at the time you view it. If you change an answer, regenerate the routine — a saved routine reflects the answers that were current when it was made.

6. Pregnancy and breastfeeding

6.1 The Routine Generator asks whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and excludes certain ingredients if you are.

6.2 Those exclusions are deliberately conservative, and they are not advice from your doctor.

6.3 We take the position, stated openly throughout this website, that very few topical ingredients have been properly studied in pregnancy, because pregnant women are not ordinarily enrolled in dermatology trials. Where the evidence is absent rather than reassuring, this website says the evidence is absent. It does not treat an absence of evidence as evidence of safety.

6.4 The consequence is that the tool will decline to choose an ingredient for you on that basis, and will say so. That is intentional. It is not a fault.

6.5 Discuss anything you intend to apply to your skin during pregnancy or breastfeeding with your doctor, obstetrician or midwife. Their advice is about you. Ours is not.

7. Products, ingredients and reactions

7.1 Ingredient information on this website is general. It does not account for the concentration, formulation, pH, vehicle or other ingredients of any particular product, all of which affect how a product behaves on skin.

7.2 Any product can cause a reaction in any individual. Patch test a new product before applying it widely, and introduce one new active at a time.

7.3 Stop using a product and seek medical attention if you develop: a spreading rash; blistering; swelling of the face, lips, mouth or tongue; difficulty breathing; or any reaction that is severe or does not settle when you stop.

7.4 Where the Content mentions a prescription treatment, it does so to explain what exists. It is not an invitation to obtain that treatment without a prescription, and we do not supply prescription-only medicines.

8. When to stop reading and see someone

This list is not exhaustive and is not a screening tool. It exists because a website that discusses skin conditions should say plainly where its usefulness ends.

Arrange to be seen if you have:

  • a mole or spot that is new, changing in size, shape or colour, bleeding, itching, or not healing;
  • acne with deep, painful lumps under the skin, or acne that is leaving scars;
  • acne or rosacea that has not improved after several months of consistent over-the-counter treatment;
  • rosacea affecting your eyes — grittiness, redness, or a feeling that something is in the eye;
  • a rash that is spreading, painful, weeping, or accompanied by fever or feeling unwell;
  • skin that is cracking, bleeding, or itching enough to disturb your sleep;
  • sudden changes in your skin alongside other symptoms — irregular periods, new hair growth, fatigue, weight change, feeling cold;
  • pigmentation that appeared suddenly, is changing quickly, or followed a new medication; or
  • any reaction described in clause 7.3.

None of these is a reason to panic. All of them are reasons to be looked at rather than to research.

9. Currency of the Content

9.1 Skincare and dermatology change. Guidance is revised, evidence accumulates, and regulatory positions move.

9.2 We review the Content and correct it when we find it wrong. But Content that was accurate when published may have been overtaken, and we do not warrant that every page is current at the moment you read it.

9.3 Where a page carries a review date, that date is the last date the page was substantively reviewed. Where it carries none, none should be inferred.

10. Sources and evidence

10.1 The Content is prepared against published clinical guidelines, systematic reviews, trials and clinical literature, is reviewed against that literature before publication, and grades what it says by the strength of the evidence behind it. Our method is set out in the Editorial & Content Policy. That is a statement about the process and not about any person's qualifications — see clause 3.1A of that Policy.

10.2 Grading is a judgement, and a judgement can be wrong. Evidence is contested, guidelines disagree, and reasonable clinicians differ. Where we have taken a position on a disputed point, the Content says that the point is disputed.

10.3 Where we can find no adequate support for a claim, our practice is to remove the claim or to state plainly that the evidence is absent — not to soften the wording until it passes.

11. Limits of our liability

11.1 Nothing in this Disclaimer excludes or restricts our liability for death or personal injury resulting from our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability which cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted. This clause prevails over the rest of this Disclaimer and reflects, among other things, section 2(1) of the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 (2020 Rev. Ed.).

11.2 Subject to clause 11.1, and to the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss, injury or damage arising from:

(a) reliance on the Content or on the output of the Routine Generator;

(b) any act or omission of yours in response to the Content, including any delay in obtaining medical attention; or

(c) any product you obtain from a third party after reading about an ingredient here.

11.3 Clause 14 of the Terms of Use applies in full to this Disclaimer.

11.4 Nothing in this Disclaimer affects your statutory rights.
